Writers on Cigarette Cards

Walter de la Mare.Walter de la Mare.

First up, the author of 'All Hallows' and 'Crewe'. Always saw him as more of a pipe smoker, if that. He and others can be found at the wonderful digital archive of the New York Public Library.

H. G. Wells.H. G. Wells.

H.G. Wells, best known for his genre-defining science fiction, but also the author of 'The Door in the Wall', 'The Stolen Body', 'Pollock and the Porroh Man', and other weird tales.

Algernon Blackwood, author and traveller.Algernon Blackwood, author and traveller.

Again, Blackwood ('The Willows', 'The Wendigo', 'Ancient Sorceries') doesn't strike me as a nicotine addict, but I could be wrong.

Marjorie Bowen.Marjorie Bowen.

'Marjorie Bowen', one of the many pen-names of the prolific Mrs Gabrielle Margaret Vere Campbell Long, produced several novels and collections of stories on supernatural themes. She also edited two pre-war anthologies of horror fiction.

Hugh Walpole.Hugh Walpole.

Rather amiable looking chap, isn't he? A successful novelist, of course, but also noted for his weird fiction i.e. 'Tarnhelm', 'Mrs Lunt', 'The Silver Mask', and quite a few others.

Rudyard Kipling.Rudyard Kipling.

Sometime Builder of Empire and author of a lot of ghost/horror stories, such as 'The Phantom Rickshaw', 'The Mark of the Beast', 'They', and quite a few others.

Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch.Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch.

'Q', but not in the Bond film sense, his tales often turn up in ghost story anthologies. His Cornish background informs many of his best stories.

Charles Dickens.Charles Dickens.

If you haven't read 'The Signalman', you have almost certainly never read an anthology of great ghost stories...

John Buchan.John Buchan.

Best known for The Thirty-Nine Steps, of course, but also rather good at old-school supernatural tales such as 'The Watcher at the Threshold', 'The Grove of Ashtaroth', and 'The Wind in the Portico'.
